THINGS I'VE HEARD

‎"If you need to shave, and you still collect baseball cards, you're gay. If you're a kid, the cards are keepsakes of your idols. If you're a grown man, they're pictures of men."

BURLY PIPE SMOKER with BOXERS

INTO THE WILD

I watched INTO THE WILD over the past 2 nights as I only had an hour to spare each night. It was a great movie and should be seen by people far and near. It's average critic rating is an 80 out of 100 and I see why it is so high.Christopher McCandless play by Emile Hirsch runs from his family right after finishing college and heads for Alaska. He has quite a few interesting adventures along the way.Hal Holbrook is one of those that he runs into in his travels. The performance by Hal Holbrook is amazing.I also ran from my family right out of High School.I joined the army where I spent 10 years of my life.I did keep in contact with my family but not as often as I wish I had especially now that my Mom has passed away.I could have had some good years in my 20's with her and the rest of my family had I not been so angry.I won't go in to specifics but I was angry about much the same things as Christopher was.He chose to go to Alaska and was not totally prepared for what he faced.I had the army and plenty of gay friends to help me through those years and while Christopher had many friends along the way, he really was going at it all ALONE and doing it his way.

LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIP

Matthew Montgomery and Windham Beacham star in this wonderful film about developing a relationship when you are total opposites. It is a funny film as I found myself laughing several times. It also has some drama as I found myself pulling for them to work through some issues and their differences. They LOVE each other, that is obvious and they have patience and humor, so maybe that Long-Term Relationship is possible.

an ANGEL named BILLY

The worst of this movie is the way over the top over acting at the most dramatic moments like when crying is needed. This is another low budget film with good looking actors that obviously have little acting experience. They actually do a pretty good job until they really have to show some emotion and then the over acting shows up.I did like the story and the positive spin on the gay community that it brings.Billy is living with his drunk father. His mom has moved on and left Billy and his brother with the homophobic man.Billy shares a kiss with one of his best buds and his father witnesses it and kicks Billy out.Billy moves to the big city and every where he turns help is there. His Mom shows up and they share a day.It is a good story worth seeing as Love is shown in many ways.

BEOWULF

I watched BEOWULF early this morning.I can say it is not a boring movie. You may recall another movie by this filmmaker The Polar Express well while I enjoyed that movie the style of computer filming made the kids look awful creepy.Robert Zemeckis uses the same style in this film but with greater success. The people look much more real.It is a entertaining film based on an old 3000 plus or minus line poem written around 700 AD.It is unknown who wrote the poem.It is the foundation for our modern hero myths such as Conan the Barbarian and King Arthur.I was somewhat impressed how the writers of the film version were able to fill the plot holes of the poem and bring it together.I am a fan of poetry and had always thought as did many scholars that this one didn't weave together a solid story. It is not what they left out of the story but what they added that amazed me.It made sense and worked for me.They filled the gaps of the story very nice.If there is one word to describe what this movie is about it is TEMPTATION.Then the CONSEQUENCES that follow.I also liked that the nudity was equal between male and female so no matter what your taste you can get an eyeful.
